Dinner On The Fly

imageimage
We have all heard cautionary tales about hawks or large owls picking up small dogs as prey while the dogs are outside. But one would think a pet would be safe in the house AND inside a closed cage, maybe not so much. Last Sunday an owl flew into a tenth floor apartment through the balcony door, opened a bird cage, killed one canary and traumatized the other one inside. The pet owner found the owl still in her home, then it flew back out and nonchalantly perched on her balcony for a photo op. The least it could do after killing her pet!

Birds do weird things when stressed! He looks like a pretty young owl,
maybe looking for his own territory. That would fit for the time of year.

Maybe he was just feeling a little like, well, yellow. You know, that lemony tang one craves from time to time.

I got the pics on yahoo images. The owl is the same one, it had been posted there but the canary is a stock pic. But hey, her canaries coulda been yellow.

Mother Nature scores again.

Next time, close the cage properly. Owls are dumb brutes - unlike ravens and crows, they'll never get in if you put a proper latch on the cage, or even just close it tightly. Which I therefore suspect the canaries' owner had neglected.
