My first impression of that illustration was that Santa met his doom on Dune.
(Jingle bells and sand worms are a bad mix.)

I read that and other Elmer stories when I was a kid. Elmer was a cross between Mr. Ed and E.T. His human pal, Stu, was a teenage nitwit, dumber than Wilbur and not quite old enough for serious sex. Too bad the author never aged him--the tales would've been more interesting.
