Everybody Was Squirrel Food Fighting

" />
Those little beasts were fast as lightning. It looked a little bit frightening. The bushy tailed guys had expert timing. This post is in honor of Squirrel Appreciation Day 2012.

I love squirrels,ROASTED!!they really are quite yummy!
Once when camping with the boy scouts our food supply was raided by raccoons, we didn't have much left but canned mixed veggies so I added a half dozen braised squirrels and presto! instant stew!

How did you hunt them?

Well, Patty, when I was a boy we "barked" squirrels. It saved the meat and removed the need to dodge pellets when eating.

@ Patty Back with the scouts I used a slingshot and snares, as the BSA has rules against scouts being armed. Today I would use a .22 rifle.
@ Expat "barking" squirrels is bad because it damages the tree!
if you use a small caliber rifle and a head shot then there are no pellets to dodge when eating. pellets implies the use of a shotgun, which I consider unsportsmanlike for small game!

@Tyrusguy: All's fair when you're hunting for food and not sport. We'uns wuz po'folk and shot and powder wuz deer and skarse besides. Pappy only giv us yunguns one load a day and if we'uns missed wy Pappy'd be right upset!

@Expat Agreed! Hence my use of the sling shot and SNARES!
Though I ALWAYS eat what I kill, or donate it to someone in need!

A friend of mine told me about a friend of his who used to work in SDI/star Wars programs. They would go out and "plunk" gophers with VERY high powered lasers. Made a nice clean hole right through the head. No pellets to worry about there
