Fly The Friendly Skies

The FAA has a program called NextGen Initiative which is planning ways to update the aviation infrastructure. One of the cutting edge ideas is to eventually have planes that fly themselves, no pilot required. It will be a while coming, but we are headed that way. Reason number 3,952 I'm glad I don't travel by air.

"Open the pod bay doors, Flight Attendant HAL."

"I'm sorry, Dave. I can't do that until you take off your shoes."

When you consider how many more air disasters have been caused by "pilot error" over "failure of an automated system", I think it's only about time something was done to redress the balance!

Again .. Gallipoli .. while I appreciate your sense at making a humorous comment please don't make them in a manner that seems to attack one of our(WU's) most valued contributors/members.

Gallipoli .. at least register on the site so people can add you to their ignore list or just take your anonymous self away from here. I doubt you have the character/honor to register though.

"I'm just trolling and getting bites too."

Okay, in light of gallipoli's admission that he's trolling, I have suspended his comments from this thread, and will remove any future comments of his I consider offensive.

It is up to Paul, Chuck or Alex to decide if any comment should be reinstated.

I had heard of the auto takeoff and land for current passenger jets, but I'm fairly sure my wife hasn't, and I intend for it to stay that way! She's a white-knuckle flier already.
As for fully automated flights, I'll wait until they can have self-driving cars before I add in the third dimension. Look at how much trouble they had with the baggage system in Denver's new airport - I'm a lot more fragile than your average suitcase!
