2 feet away from loser – he obviously cheated, by walking behind to other guy while they were supposed to be taking 10 paces.

The formal rules I saw say you take ten paces, but if you both miss, you each advance two paces towards the other and try again, repeating as necessary. With the accuracy (or lack of same) of some of those dueling pistols, it's not unreasonable they might occasionally wind up toe-to-toe.

To me the most remarkable thing about this ad is that the guy is bald.

When I first saw the picture I thought he was holding a cucumber.

The pistol is definitely phallic, but now that I've looked at the picture closely, what's up with his left hand? The curve of his fingers, its position relative to her, and the look on her face . . . if I didn't know better (and I don't), I'd say what happens next wouldn't appear in a Disney movie.

Very observant, Phideaux. Maybe that's why they had to put so much starch in those pants, to keep them looking right.

The barrel of the pistol is not that long, but it is placed exactly in front of the statue in back, to make the image we see. I wonder if the date on this ad isn't from the golden age of subliminal advertising?
