While I'm not sure about the claim of "most expensive", I ran the given price through the inflation calculator and it cam up with an equivalent cost of $585.37 USD. I remember paying just about that much for my present posh suit three years ago.

It may well have been at the high end of the range for off-the-peg suits, but bespoke must have been rather more expensive.

@KDP -- I think they're referring to the massive cost to create Acrilan, the acrylic fiber Monsanto developed to compete with DuPont's Orlon. At the time, synthetics were considered a good thing, and an acrylic/wool blend was high style. Actually, it might have been very nice -- I think the texture was similar to cashmere.
