Fascinating. I'd seen unhidden painted edges before - where the edge was painted instead of, not as well as, gilded - but never this kind.

I have a book (copyright 1892) which someone tried to edge-paint. They obviously didn't know what they were doing because you now can't open it. Sadly, it falls into the "not quite valuable enough to justify sending to a restorer" category.
