How much for this meal?

Continuing the "overpriced stuff" theme that I began in a previous post, how much would you be willing to pay for this meal?

What you get -- Dinner at Masa, a sushi restaurant in NY City. From Wikipedia:

Reservations for the 26 available seats are taken three weeks in advance. Chef Masa prepares the menu himself, often including seasonal ingredients. He uses many exotic ingredients, such as truffles and Kobe beef; Most of the fish are flown in from Japan. Chef Masa can be seen working behind the bar and will sometimes serve the food as well.

There's no menu to order from. You get whatever you're served.

The cost: It's a fixed price of $400 per person, to which a 20% tip is automatically added. Then there's tax. So you're looking at a minimum of $513 per person. If you want anything to drink, be prepared to pay extra.

Via J-Walk, the receipt of a recent Masa diner, posted on Flickr. Seriously, if you're going to splurge by going there, why ruin the meal by getting a Diet Coke? Just ask for water.

I will never again complain about a $100.00 bill for taking the family out to eat sushi. 🐛

I'm with Lev on this one. $5 for a Diet Coke? Outrageous!

I agree that $5 for a soft drink is ridiculous but $400 for a meal that you don't even get to chose...you don't think that is utterly risible. You've gotta be kidding.

You don't get to choose what to eat? What about if they bring me something I'm allergic to?
Screw the salt & pepper shakers, that whole table is coming home with me!

Well Jules, I guess you'll break out in hives while trying to pay this bill cause I'm sure he wouldn't be too happy about you leaving without paying.

So the guy from yesterday was complaining about spending $70 for a massage and not getting a happy ending but no one at that place thinks it's at all odd to shell out $500 for food you might not want. Okay, yup, that makes perfect sense.

Wait. The website says he's an artist so it's OK...$400 is reasonable. I am sure that if he has any japanese writing in the place it probably means "stupid, fat, american dog will pay high price for anything oriental".

Jules, for $500 I better have a hot little jap waitress following me around for the rest of the day with her hands in my pants. On second thought, she better be hanging upside-down in front of me and giving me some lip service for the rest of the day.

Pay for dead fish! Not this lad.

I don't agree with that Irene. I think 'diminishing returns' kicks in alot sooner than $160. Unless a complimentary bottle of really good wine is included in that price.

A steak dinner from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse (that's a la carte and I'm not sure if its just a local place) will cost over $100 but, in my opinion, a steak dinner from Outback is much better and that comes in for about $20. Unless your willing to pay $100 for service and ambiance (which I don't find to be any better)I don't think it's worth it at all.

Ruth's Chris Steakhouse - we have those up here too

Emeril's - took one look at the prices on that menu and went somewhere else (Pat O'Brians) to eat! And maybe drink a little, but just maybe, and only a little......right
Posted by Jules in Connecticut on 11/12/08 at 08:32 PM
Jules - Ya'll have Pat O's up there? I never would have thought.

Thanks Wayne. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who likes to eat asian. 😊 Or have asian service anyway.

Oh yeah, here's my ass... get that corn cob from over there, and yeah, you know what to do!
Posted by qualityleashdog on 11/12/08 at 09:43 PM
Nah, I was at Universal for that
Posted by Jules in Connecticut on 11/12/08 at 09:53 PM
I'm surprised they have one at Universal. Have you ever been to New Orleans? Pat O's is a great place to tie one on. I have spent many a night getting loaded in the piano bar, singing along with the crowd. For my senior prom, my date and I went there. I can't tell you, mainly cause I can't remember, how many drinks people bought us.

This just goes to show that if you make a big enough deal out of it, people will come flocking.

Maxx - I did think of you, though, with the sushi theme!
