Husband For Sale

1935: Mary Ann and Fred Cordes weren't doing too well with their marriage. But instead of just getting a divorce, like normal people, they (well, it was mostly Mary Ann's idea) hatched a plan to sell Fred for $1500 to any woman willing to buy him. Mary Ann hoped to use the money to travel to Ireland, her childhood home.

I don't know how their plan turned out. It's one of those stories that never got a follow-up in the press. But I can't imagine women were lining up to pay $1500 to acquire "all the rights" to a 40-year-old unemployed ice-cream maker.

She overpriced him!
$1,500 of 1935 dollars would be worth: $25,862.07 in 2014!

I got $26,000 from my search. That was more than a block of houses!

How about the husband who trades his forty year old wife for two twenties?

Tried that.... It doesn't work.

Wow! Selling a green card even back then!
Not sure what immigration law was likein those days, but in 2014 people sell green cards (via marriage) for 50K. So I'm told.

The $1500 was not the value of the husband. The $1500 was to be established in New York, and with a "husband" in order to be respectable -- as opposed to showing up in NYC and not knowing anybody which could lead to a life of "sin" (prostitution).

@Tyrusguy ... she has one of the sexiest phone voices you will ever hear. She could be one of those "ladies" you call at 3am and not Jake from State Farm.

I checked on prices in 1935. A Ford V-8 four door was $495 & a average house was $6,300. $1,500 per year was a good wage if you had a job.
