I was into slot cars & helped build an 89ft track so.. what were those steering wheels for? The only control you had was speed.

I was thinking the same thing. Where we raced, you needed your own controller. If you weren't racing, you were in the cutout hollows to help put cars back on the track.

My guess is that the steering wheels were put there to make them feel more like they are driving a car. But dumb, because it would divide your attention from the real control, speed.
