misspelling OK

One of those news stories destined to launch a million Internet "Comments"
A British professor suggested we'd all save so much time (especially teachers and students) if we just took, say, the 20 most-often misspelled words and officially blessed them, instead, as acceptable alternative spellings. Great idea; let's move on. No, no, civilized society is doomed. Is not. Is, too. (Bonus: One of the new words is "wierd.") Daily Mail (London)

This is an awful idea. But on a related note, can we bless math errors? I'm terrible at math, too lazy to get a calculator, and sensitive enough that my feelings get hurt when my bank statement shows a different balance than my checkbook.

The wife has been teaching English as a Foreign language for over 30 years. Spelling in English is just plain illogical! "'I' before 'E' except after 'C' and in words like neighbor and weigh." just isn't a rule it's a headache.

As one who could never spell I agree. Let's nuke the whole system, throw out 'Q' and 'C' and get it right this time.
