The "part of something larger" threw me -- I was trying to figure out what the steam engine could be powering that you'd need to know the time, temp, and barometric pressure while operating it. Only thing I could come up with was some sort of accessory on a hot air balloon.

French industrial clocks turn up from time to time on Antiques Roadshow (BBC version). They're always kind of neat but valued way too highly for my blood.
