Olfactometer

image
Now that pot is legal many places law enforcement is going a a different route against it. Denver police have acquired an olfactometer to detect the concentration of marijuana smoke in the air. They will be issuing citations for odor ordinance violations if there is too 'high' a concentration of the aroma in public areas adjacent to private homes where the drug is being used. The fine for this ordinance (money maker) is $2000.

I wonder if there's a good reason it requires one's nose to work...

This is already being challenged in court under the argument that it doesn't also include tobacco smoke.

Well......has anyone ever had a "contact high" (=second hand smoke)

Being surrounded by pot smoke can produce a mild high, even if a person is not smoking pot.

So yes I agree the law sounds ridiculous. At the same time, though, 24/7 pot smoke is something I would want to avoid. Here in California, medical marijuana cards are still easy to get. A lady I know has the apartment above a serious pot smoker. She herself is a total non-smoker and is worried about the smell getting into her work clothes.

So it gets complicated. ...

@girlgeniusNYC - we have been told here in the Sheriff dept to use discretion now in traffic stops that involve "pot" being found. We can let them go (at small amounts), tow the car (they can get a ride or taxi), and forward info to the district attorney if they want to pursue charges. A much more practical approach even in our "red" conservative state.
