Rodent Fur in Ketchup

BBC News reports that Brazilian health officials banned a batch of Heinz ketchup made in Mexico after traces of rodent fur were found in it.

Back in the 60s, my mother graduated from college with a degree in chemistry, and the first job she got with that degree was working in a Heinz factory, microscopically examining ketchup samples for things like bug parts and rodent fur. As she tells it, her responsibility wasn't to make sure that there was no nasty stuff in the ketchup. Instead, she was only supposed to make sure that the nasty stuff didn't exceed certain levels. So all the condiments you buy are going to have unpleasant things in them. The question is just how much.

It's no big secret and I don't lose any sleep over the fact that there are some contaminants in the foodstuffs I buy. All that can be done is to hold contamination of the mass food supply to a minimum. If you think about all the little beasties crawling on your skin you'd want to strip it off completely.

Everything has a little something nasty in it even if you grow it in your own garden.

FYI I just read a study that showed the copper leaching from copper water pipes supposedly now is a major contributor to Alzheimer's disease. I'm sure if we all now switch to plastic/PVC something in it will be found to cause something else.

Eh. Everything has been linked to Alzheimer's (and autism, and cancer, and...). Almost none of these links stand up to scrutiny. Copper at least has the known disadvantage of its compounds being (sometimes very) poisonous in general, so replacing it would be a good idea in general. Aluminium, not so much; I have yet to see a convincing report on its deleteriousness.
