Squirrely Little Guys

Hurricane Katia left these 5 week old squirrel kittens (who knew they were called kittens?) homeless. They were rescued and turned over to a wildlife sanctuary where they are being cared for. The cute little babies are bottle fed goat's milk every three hours by sanctuary volunteers. More great pictures at the link.

Are they the cutest little things?! I had no idea they were called kittens either. I just love them!

A friend of the family had one of these for a pet. He carried it around in his shirt. The critter would wrap itself around the guy's waist and, occasionally, stick it's head out between the buttons.

REF: Kittens... nope. I've always heard them called kits.

Well, I've learned my interesting fact for the day so I can go back to bed now.

From Wikipedia list of animal names

Animal - Squirrel
Young - pup, kit, kitten
Female - doe
Male - buck
Group - squad, dray, scurry
Adjective - sciurine

You are both right about what the young are called.

they are one of the most lovable rodents.

Whatever they're called the do cook up nicely.

BTW, while we're on the subject of squirrels here's a trivia quiz

What does "barking a squirrel" mean?

One of my uncles in Arkansas used to "bark a squirrel". He would shoot the tree just a hair below the squirrels head and the wood chips would kill it. You did that when you were hunting with a weapon too large bore to shoot the squirrel directly and still have something left to cook.

And I do remember my aunt Elva could make some of the tastiest chicken fried squirrel this side of heaven. 😝

Squirrels are tree rats. I've lost more pecans to squirrels than drought. Please eat all you want, there's plenty.
