Waves, by Daniel Palacios

From the artist's description:
A long piece of rope represents three dimensionally a series of waves floating in space, as well as producing sounds from the physical action of their movement: the rope which creates the volume also simultaneously creates the sound by cutting through the air, making up a single element.
Depending on how we may act in front of it, according to the number of observers and their movements, it will pass from a steady line without sound to chaotic shapes of irregular sounds (the more movement there is around the installation) through the different phases of sinusoidal waves and harmonic sounds.

It's kind of hypnotic, but I kept wondering what happens if the rope breaks. (via coilhouse)

Some idiot is going to stick their hand in the way and get badly injured.

If those aren't the artist's kids he better hope the rope doesn't break or he may learn just exactly which Art is going to inspire him to greater lengths!

Could this be harnessed as some kind of new miracle kitchen chopping aid?

Anybody see the movie Ghost Ship? There is a dance on the main deck and the bad guys turn on a machine that recoils a steel cable that is still hooked up. When it snaps it cuts everyone but a young girl in half, she is too short. Freaky, all the talk about the rope snapping reminded me of it.

Patty, I didn't see that movie but the event you described could, very well, happen. Any heavy gauge wire becomes a lethal weapon if stretched past its breaking point and allowed to snap back. Take a simple piece of string, stretch it as taught as you can then cut it with sharp scissors and watch the ends recoil. Now, apply that a few thousand times and add wire.

BTW, the way a twisted loop of rope/wire laying on the deck is known as an "ass hole" and will snap over if/when the line is pulled tight. This too, can be lethal.

Watch this.

Yea, that may be a bit much but the concept works.

I noticed that all the people's innards are solid. Way less messy.
