I clicked through to the original article to find out the date. This was not an industrial accident from the Charlie Chaplin era. It happened in September 1987. That's only 26 (almost 27) years ago.

You're right, Daha, I found the same story in the NY Times! Click Here

One of my earliest memories is getting my shoe stuck in an escalator in St. Louis. IIRC it had wooden guard where the steps went under the top landing and the sole of my shoe when under one of them.

Expat,

I remember a wooden escalator on the Budweiser plant tour (in St. Louis). That the one?

@CRC: No I think it was one of the department stores. My family had a store up river and bought some clothing items through them.

Wow, Daha, I had assumed it was a lot earlier than that. What an awful thing to have happen!

Beware of man-eating escalators (and strangers with candy)! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xf3ELqb6kc#t=11

Her boys are 37, 33, and 30 now. I lost my dad at 8. My sisters were 4 and 2. I know the lasting grief losing a parent as a young child leaves you with. To those boys, if any of you young men read this please know we are good people who share strange stories and try to find humor in the unusual things that happen in life. Please don't be offended by any comments here. I hope you have all found happiness over the years. Live joyfully, that's what she would have wanted, its what all mothers want for their children.
