In 1972, I was an Army medical lab tech stationed at Camp Kue Army Hospital on Okinawa. There was a Navy medical corpsman assigned to one of the many Marine bases on the island who deliberately cut off his own hand to get out of the service. We had his hand in a jar of formaldehyde in our lab and would show it to our friends if they didn't believe us when we told them about it.
