Decomposition of a Pig

A time-lapse movie of a decomposing pig, taken by Dr. Jerry Payne in the 1960s as part of his graduate studies. It's four days compressed into six minutes. Not much happens at first, but around the 3 minute mark things get pretty interesting. There's a nasty little surprise at the end as well. (Note: the pig died of natural causes.)

The purple dots that appear around 2:40 are beads to show the movement of soil by insects.

You may not want to watch this while you're eating a meal.

Apparently, none of those bugs were Jewish.

No one likes maggots at first, but eventually they grow on you.

And today you can watch such events almost nightly on your very own TV in your very own living room during almost any one of the many, many CSI based series.

I'm surprised that all of that happens in 4 days.

Maxx, the good news is that once you're dead, no one has to ask, "What's eatin' you?"

actually bookwyrm, I think I would have preferred high-def. It was kind of hard to see what was going on, especially around the face when the skin started to be peeled back.

This video was so much fun to watch yesterday while I was eating some canadian bacon for breakfast that I needed a repeat today. Mmmmmmmm.

I say cremation too but only because I think burial is a huge waste of money.

That was cool! Only 4 days? I wonder what kind of environmental conditions the piggy was lying in?

patty, the version I remember goes
the worms crawl in,
the worms crawl out,
in your stomach and out your mouth,
in your nose and out your toes
and that's the way the story goes

That is pretty gruesome. I think that was from a movie.
