The only thing my dog hates more than his foot is his tail. He does similar stuff with both.

My two cents as a person with a whole hell of a lot of angry vs. nice dog experience is that that kind of a lip curling snarl is not a happy playful one, it's a gonna kill you one. Of course without knowing everything I can't say anything for certain, but I've seen a lot growls, of all kinds, and that doesn't look innocent.
