Finishes and Starts

Dear Fellow WUvians,

Let me just add my two cents to the ongoing dialogue about this blog. First, I've had a wonderful time doing it, working alongside such geniuses of the bizarre as Alex and Chuck. Second, I'm proud of and honored by the community of readers and participants that has evolved here. You can congratulate yourselves on being the First Family of Weird.

But the economics of all this fun are insupportable, alas. I currently spend from 1.0 to 1.5 hours daily on WU. That sounds trivial, doesn't it? But consider that that amounts to one work week per month! A week in which I generate no money to feed a plump cocker spaniel named Brownie. Look at him: could you resist his entreaties for more kibbles? And kibbles cost money.

In any case, I applaud and support Alex's attempt to change the site to viewer participation, and I'll probably contribute in the far future as circumstances allow. But for all of May and June, I intend to perform at my regular rate of two posts per weekday and one apiece on the weekend days, so as to reach our one-year anniversary in July with head nobly upheld.

Stay weird!

I've got an idea that might help you Paul. Do your WU postings in a public setting with a laptop & wireless internet connection, tell all the pedestrians that it's performance art and leave out a donation box. It might bring in a couple of bucks a week.

On a separate note, where did you get the photo of the cat in a beanie?

Matt--the kitty was the result of a Google Image search.

As for the performance art concept--you laugh now, but when Pipilotti Rist endorses me, I'll be rich!

Paul,

We will deeply miss your weirdness. As someone who was known as Captain Weird in college I consider myself a connoisseur of the weird, and your contributions to the field have been truly amazing. I only hope that we can carry on without you in ways which even you would find deeply disturbing. :ahhh:

As a Whovian, I also want to thank you for identifying us as WUvians. It's nice to finally have acknowledgment that we are not Earthlings, even if we may be temporarily stuck here! 😛

The main problem that I see from having us WUvians take over is that we might accidentally post the same content. Say I find an article that I think is weird enough to share, and Expat finds it at the same time, now we've got the article posted twice on the front page. Perhaps that would be something else the forums can be used for, a quick check to say "I'm posting this tomorrow" kind of thing. Aside from that, I think it's a great idea. It will open up the content for the site for more people as there will be more versions of weirdness to find. 😊

Kay--that's really my Brownie, totally chocolate colored, standing in front of my iving-room cabinet that holds vinyl records. Maybe the tone's off in the pic.

Vinyl records! Wow! You're really dating yourself, Paul. Of course, at least that way you know it's safe sex! 😝
