There for a minute I was hoping that it included metaphoric castration, better known in most societies as marriage. But it doesn't.

Patty - Did you follow the link half way down the story to another story warning to stay out of this rural lake? For men who want a more sporting way than swimming with crocodiles to commit suicide, this may be the way to go!

A man without accoutrement' is likely to also be without female companionship. She tries to find someone else to "improve'. Thus longer life.

A man asks his doctor, "I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't play risky sports, and I don't chase women. Will that help me live longer."
The doctor says "Why do you want to live longer?"

Probably because they don't have prostste cancer as quickly as me who are producing testosterone. The prostate was described by one medical lecturer I had as " The mammal 'Off switch" as it's constant reproduction of cells coupled with the physical damage it receives from muscular contractions and exposure to toxins make it a prime site for cancer cells to develop. As long as you have one, you are guaranteed to get cancer in it - unless something else kills you off first"
