Queen Victoria in Goggles

Queen Victoria looked very steampunk when she had to wear goggles in 1899 in an attempt to cure her cataracts. Though I'm not sure how goggles would have helped without surgery, which she refused to have.

And in a case of art imitating life, you can buy a "Steampunk Queen Victoria" mug here. I'm not sure if the site selling the mug realizes that Queen Victoria actually wore goggles like this in real life.

The specially & shaped treated lenses focused the rays of the sun in such a way that they would have burnt off the cataracs. What the doctor didn't plan for was that she was in England where the sun never shines!

How accurate is that treatment?

The description of the mug on the website says "Features an image of Queen Victoria wearing steampunk googles."

Considering she was eighty years old and a year and a half away from dying, it was likely a wise idea to have forwent surgery.

Those goggles would have looked right if she were riding a Harley. 😛 I suppose that would make her a Harley Queen!

The goggles put her very much in the Steam Punk fashion mix.

On another note some historical sources claim she was quite the swinger for her time.

@Patty: It's 100%. Almost as soon as the focused rays hit your eyes your cataract problem is over forever!

Never could quite get into steampunk. Too much pressure I guess.
Then again, electric punk is revolting.
