People Whose Sex Lives Are Worse Than Yours
In a routine website story about an attempted abduction of a teenager, the crack Orlando TV station WKMG-TV very helpfully included a map of the spot of the attempt (in the Daytona Beach area) and searched the state's database to see how many registered sex offenders live within five miles. Answer: OMG! Who isn't a registered sex offender? They're everywhere! WKMG-TV

Hmmm... I don't think I want to live there.

I want to live as far away from there as possible.

When I was looking for a house, I checked out all my neighborhoods ahead of time. Of course, you can only see the ones who are registered and whose information is current, but it's helpful. Very creepy.

BTW, Mimzy, you should check what your state and local ordinances are about required distance between registered offenders and day care facilities. Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to drop a note to the Day Care facility, just in case they don't know. Better safe than sorry.

Also check to see what constituted a "sex crime" in the area. Taking a pee behind a tree just doesn't quite come up (go down?) to the same level as kidnapping and sexual perversion on a 9 year old.

In Texas, if you go to the DPS website to check the registry, it tells you what the crime was (not in detail). For example, my ex is now registered becaue of "indecency with a child/sexual contact" and it lists the victim's age as 16.

KW - Was that before or after he became your ex? Or were you the 16 year old?

In most states, public indecency is not a registerable offense. I agree about the statutory "rapists" making the list, but I know for a fact that most of the ones in my neighborhood are not "innocent" offenders. A trip to your local police station to look at the public records (with details) will freak you out.

I get freaked out whenever we get one of the notices about a sex offender living in the neighborhood. I have the whitest children around...and the best video gamers.

Madd Maxx - that was WAY after. We dated when I was 18 and he was 30 (but I was too young and stupid to see the problem with that). We broke up when I was 20 and he was 32 - I was 6 months pregnant at the time. I didn't find out about the registry thing until about a year ago (I'm 30 now). Thankfully my daughter has never met her father and hopefully she never will, but I immediately had my visitation order ammended to require supervised visits, because you just never know.

I don't mean to pry but I was curious. Smart move on the supervised visits just in case.

I don't take it as prying... I don't HAVE to answer 😊 We're working toward having his rights stripped so my husband can adopt her. He's the only dad she's ever known. I'm just glad I found my common sense once I hit 20 and kicked his sorry butt to the curb!

KW - whew! That's good cause I did mean to pry 😉

Madd Maxx - if that's the case then I AM offended! lol :grrr:
Posted by KW in Dallas, TX on 10/09/08 at 03:39 PM
No, that's definitely statutory rape, not public indecency.
