St. Pancake Day

The Dutch cartoonist Jan Kruis, recently deceased, was responsible for proclaiming November 29th of every year to be the "Sint Pannekoek-feest," and getting the whole country to play along. The main tradition is to wear a pancake on your head.

He didn't intend it to catch on... it was just a joke in his strip, where a character invented it as an excuse to have pancakes. For obvious reasons, children and students thought this was a sterling idea, and started doing it for real. Have to say, though, I don't know anyone who actually does it; but apparently there are people who do.
