I get SO irritated by people who park in a handicapped spots without a proper permit! I won't judge anyone if they have the proper tags, even if they don't "look" handicapped (I have a friend with a severe heart condition and he doesn't "look" handicapped). I can't tell you how many times I've been out with him and we are unable to find a proper spot for him to park in because some idiot decided THEY needed to park there.

I used to carry around a supply of those bumper stickers that say "This car does not park illegally in handicapped spots" and stick them on the windshield of cars driven by teenagers who were spry and lazy (and without the placard).

I don't mind the handicap spots, in fact, I think they're a great idea. But..... When I see someone WITH the sticker pull in, hop out of the car, and run into the mall, well.... you get my drift.

The worse case I ever saw was on a Corvette. The couple unfolded from the car and she (passenger) lightly limped into SuperWally's.
If you can get into and out of a Corvette (and or roadster) then you're NOT cripple!

Expat - I agree. While I don't think handicapped spaces should be used by non-handicapped people I do think that handicap plates are given out way too freely.

My parents refuse to get one even though my little sister is down-syndrome. Their reasoning is that she walks fine so they don't need special parking.

My brother and his wife, who also have a down-syndrome daughter who is not as severe as my sister, make use of their handicap plate any chance they get.

I gotta get me one of those placards. Best spot in the lot, every time!

MM - My mom had a placard after she had her hip replaced. It was good for a year. However, once she was able to walk without a walker or cane, she refused to use it.

That's another thing. My mom had both knees replaced (I joke to my dad about most men just finding a younger wife instead of rebuilding the one they already have; he says he's too old to start breaking another one in) and still refused to use a handicap plate. She's a tough old bird.

I like to park in handicapped spaces while handicapped people make handicapped faces.
