alabama sheriffs

Update on the Alabama sheriffs' inmate-feeding law
A federal judge in Alabama sent one sheriff to jail for a day to encourage him to stop exploiting that state law requiring sheriffs to spend only up to $1.75 a day per prisoner on food (and if the sheriff spent less than that, he can keep the difference). The New York Times has a big breakout on it this morning, but if you've been keeping up with your News of the Weird reading, you knew about it July [NOTW M066, 7-13-2008]. New York Times

$1.75 is a lot of rice & beans! What're they bitchin' about?

Here is a sample breakdown of what $12.25 can buy for a week's worth of food:
1 Gallon of milk
1 loaf of bread
2 pounds of dry beans
2 cans of tuna
7 packs of ramen noodles
1 jar of peanut butter
It's not a very exciting diet, but it is enough to survive on, and as Wenthral said, they are there to be punished.

A sheriff.....in jail......how much abuse did that guy's cornhole take?!?

Am I missing something here? The sheriff was well within the law, right? Granted, the law needs to be changed but he was within the law...wasn't he?

Maybe some version of a neglect charge?

Maybe so Jules. I do think it's pretty stupid that the sheriff gets to pocket the money. The money should at least go towards the sheriff department to help lower the tax burden.

I'm still stuck on how much trauma the other inmates would have put this guy through that day

I'm sure that he was kept away from general pop. If not, he may have ended up on the menu.
