William Hill wasn't just a one-off crackpot. I see the family history makes them out to be an established rescue operation for people caught in the Niagara River. I would nominate him for a Darwin, though.

This almost got to be the national sport for awhile. Someone did, finally, make it IIRC.

Sort of the mentality that goes along with swimming with alligators.

They have a museum, or at least the info is part of one, about the many tries and failures as well as the few successes up there in Niagara, NY. Hubby and I have been there a couple of times over the years. It is a beautiful sight but definitely a power of nature that should be respected.
