League of Exotic Dancers On Strike

These Hollywood strippers, members of the League of Exotic Dancers, refuse to work because "the low wage scale of $95 at week" they receive when they take time off. They are (l-r): Champagne; Daurene Dare; Jennie "The Bazoom Girl" Lee, president of the league, Rusty Lane; and Novita.

Novita was an amazing dancer, professionally trained. Safe for work, but I wouldn’t watch it there. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1zizb7

SDNavyVet--what a great film! Many thanks for bringing it to us. Sometimes the tune that Novita is dancing to sounds like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

Thanks for your website, Paul. I agree on the song, can’t name that tune though. Patti Waggin dances last, she has quite a bit written about her and her White Sox pitcher husband. Novita was quite popular to many people, worked in a club manage by Lenny Bruce and knew him well; all of this is well outside my area of expertise, but I’m glad some of the history has been captured on the internet. Search “Novita” and “burlesque”.

$85 a week in 1955 would be worth almost $1,000 a week these days. Not great, not bad, but if you take into account what they say about having to buy their own costumes, I can imagine them finding it a bit on the low side - at least my employer doesn't expect me to pay for the new desks he just bought.
