Canada Geese are the same. Every year one nests in the middle of our parking lot at work and her mate chases everyone who dares to get too close. I've been attacked and pecked at. They go after the local wildlife and the odd stray plastic bag too.

Same experience here when I worked in Minneapolis. You forgot to mention the amount of feces they leave on the sidewalks and how slippery it is to the unobservant pedestrian.

Swans are basically giant geese. Geese will defend their territory to the death or, preferably, yours.
