Teaching By Negative Example

" />
North Marion High School in Ocala, Florida had been having trouble with someone stealing from the gym lockers. Since the complaints had not resulted in stopping the thefts one student took matters in his own hands. The student set his cell phone camcorder to record and put it in an empty locker across from the ones the students were using while in gym class. Upon finding the gym teacher, Steven Simmons, captured on video riffling through the lockers, the student took the cell phone to the school resource officer. The teacher has since been arrested.

Well I guess that is different than recording for the reason of seeing teenage boobs :zip: It's still just as wrong.

alex or paul can the clip stay? it's a little oversized, i'll take it down if it's a problem.

this story reminded me of one from my kids' high school a while back. it seems a teacher had a habit of cussing the class out, yelling, ect. one day one of the kids called home and recorded one of the diatribes on his family's answering machine. of course mom raised a fuss and the teacher, while not fired, was diciplined. as a result a new and much stricter cell phone policy was enacted and the staff started confiscating phones and suspending students for having them even if not in use. now i do not have any problem with no cell phones in school, but what struck me is the dilligence shown about their presence after a teacher was caught red handed being inappropriate by one. which all makes me wonder what the n. marion school policy is on cell phones at school now as compared to before the above incident. i know i'm cynical, but as chuck tells us each week 'you still aren;t cyinical enough.' 😊

Let me clarify that comment more : The student should have resorted to other legal methods. The means doesn't always justify the ends. If the school or police decided to make that kind of surveillance that's one thing. Even though it resulted in a positive way people should not take the law into their own hands.

yes, but the story states that the problem had gone on for some time without resolution. the kid set it up after everyone changed and shut it off before anyone started to change back to their street clothes as you can see on the video. so no one was caught in a compromising position but the thief/teacher. i bet the kid thought he'd catch another kid.

I can't believe they spent all that money on such a fancy and professional title and then pointed the camera at the cell phone to record the video. I mean seriously, do they point their cameras at a CCTV in order to broadcast a live interview?

i thought of that too sam. they should have been able to download it you'd think.

But is the teacher still getting his paycheck? He'd have tenure after 20 years, for sure.

what did i tell ya about the school getting after the kid because he caught a teacher in the wrong! the following is from a story today:
"Deputies said after years of thefts and no other suspects, the video played a key role.

“It wasn't until the student set up this video and actually caught the teacher doing it and he was able to say look you can clearly see it's the Physical Education teacher,” said Jenifer Lowe, a spokeswoman for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

A school spokesman said it's possible the student who recorded the cell phone video could get in trouble as well because students are not supposed to use their phones during the day.

School officials said they are not allowed to record video in locker rooms because of privacy.

There is no word on what the repercussions could be."

after years of these kids being robbed while in gym class with the school taking no action this kid catches the culprit and they make noises about punishing him. and they wonder why there are lawsuits.

I can't imagine this has been going on for _years_ and no one knew anything about it. Common sense would point to the teacher - being that students are robbed, only during gym class, over the course of a few years. But students come and go. The only thing that remains... is the teacher. There had to be at least suspicion. So, I think they are just trying to draw attention away from the fact that this teacher got away with it for so long. "Let's blame the student for using his phone during the day, etc, and people will focus on that instead."
