The Number 47

47, as wikipedia notes, is "the natural number following 46 and preceding 48". There are some other interesting things about the number:
  • There exists a 47 society... which propagates the belief that the number forty-seven occurs in nature with noticeably higher frequency than other natural numbers, that it is the quintessential random number.
  • The number 47, its reverse of 74, or a multiple of 47 occurs in some way or other in almost every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and its spin-offs Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise.
  • 47 is the telephone dialing country code for Norway

You can find any number if you look for it. There are 47 keys on my keyboard that I use on a daily basis, if you don't count the doubles such as shift, alt, or the enter on the far right. My weekly commute to and from work is approximately 47 miles (I checked with Google Earth).

I watched quite a bit of the Star Trek: The Next Generation marathon that was on christmas day (that's right folks, I'm a dork!) and definitely did not notice the number 47.

47 is Pomona College's (Claremont, CA) magic or lucky number. For example, there are 47 trees in the Quad. To get to the college from Ontario Airport, you take Rte 10 to Exit 47, and so forth.

One of the writers for TNG was a Pomona grad, which is why there are more than a few referenced to 47. Or so I've been told.

Here ends your edification for the night! :cheese:
