Most Amish sects have bowed to the argument that public safety, and theirs, is just a tad more important. Or, at least acknowledged that inconvenient biblical edict about obeying the law of the land. But not these folks- Amish men go to jail over placards

Y'know, I did a search of your Xian bible on-line and nowhere in there did I come up with any "edict" about "obeying the law of the land". Do you always invent moral references to mock people?

Duke, it's the line about rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. Technically, I suppose, it's only instructions to pay your taxes.

I was wondering about this. They want to use grey reflective tape. I suppose that may help at night, but then, aren't those buggies required to carry headlights and taillights like any other vehicle after dark? What about during the day, which is when the orange part of the triangle is visible?

I wonder what will happen when (because it is "when", not "if") someone hits a buggy. Who will be at fault? Who foots the medical bills for the buggy passengers (whom I strongly suspect have no seatbelts to wear, after all). Who pays for the horse?

Can't some enterprising DA hammer out some charges about wilfully endangering the horse?

Quoting from another site -

If you read Romans, Chapter 13, you will find an entire chapter about obeying the laws of man. Essentially, this chapter in Romans explains that man is to obey those that are put in authority over him, because those authorities are established by God, who is in charge of all things anyway. It explains that men who are in power on earth only hold their power because God allows it, so we are to obey those that govern us because in doing so, we are obeying God.

That said, however -- we are NOT to obey man when his laws conflict with God's laws. So, this chapter in Romans is NOT a justification, for example, for obeying Hitler, because he was an authority figure. Hitler's laws contradicted God's laws, and when this happens, man must obey the higher authority. If we were commanded by our authorities to do something that conflicted with God's laws, then we cannot obey man's laws.

The problem with this is that people try to pervert it. For example, it is not OK to blow up abortion clinics or kill abortion doctors just because one is opposed to abortion and believes that abortion is murder and God forbids it. We are to leave vengeance to God ("vengeance is mine," says the Lord, "I will repay.") God gets to define what he means by "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth," not us.

In Peter 2:13-16, people are to submit themselves to the ordinances of man, whether he is king or governor. According to this passage, it is the will of God for people to obey, for by doing so they may put to silence "the ignorance of foolish men"

TheCannyScot is also correct referring to Jesus's words, to "..render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's." being interpreted to mean to pay your taxes. It has also been extrapolated by many Christian sects to include obedience to civil law, unless in conflict with God's ordinances. This is where the jailed men's sect varies in belief from the more "mainstream" Amish sects. Whew..now i'm bushed. 😛

@ danny53 Excellent post! I have always respected the Amish for living their beliefs.
Too bad none of them will be able to read how much we support them!
BTW If my reputation ever gets completely trashed by the Internet, becoming Amish has always been my back-up plan!

...and in the spirit of contrition - the 'law of the land' phrase I used above was my own poor choice of words, and was intended to be concise, not to paraphrase scripture. However, mocking other people seems to be one of the things we do best here on WU. 😜

@ TheCannyScot - "when someone hits a buggy"? Just Google 'Amish accidents'. The list is, unfortunately, very long. This is why the 'placard during the day and lights during the night' ordinances came into being over the past 30 years. It's been sorta like shooting fish in a barrel while blindfolded. 🙄

Religious fanatics just grind my teeth down to the nubs! If their beliefs won't allow them the use of safety equipment then they are free to practice it on their own land and stay off everyone else's!

Where in the bible does it say that they have some god given right to drive their buggies in modern day traffic anyhow???

ARRRRRGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!
