Unfazed By Fire

People who ignore fires burning around them, even as firemen battle to control the flames, seems to be a recurring theme in weird news. For instance, in addition to the case below, we've also seen the Thurlow family who wouldn't let a fire cause them to miss the latest episode of St. Elsewhere.

The Sikeston Daily Standard - Feb 19, 1959

Crocks of Granite. In Detroit, while fire blazed in the kitchen of Frank Collins' Bar, while the building filled with smoke, while firemen dragged hoses through the barroom and water sloshed on the floor, seven steady customers refused to budge from their bar stools.

And then, there's Seamus Kennedy singing about a similar pub in Ireland:

Sounds like the Hurricane Party some Texans were attending on the Gulf Coast a number of years ago. They had lots of liquid courage to drink and ignored the authorities warnings. Both they and the building were gone after the storm. I wonder if they let drunks into Heaven?

I was confronted with this phenomenon a couple of times during my career as a fireman. In a movie theater and a bar. Just an unbelievable scene. Then there was the volunteer who went into a closed room I knew to be filled with military grade CS tear gas without a BA on, despite my warning. The funny part was him trying to find the glass door to get out with his eyes closed. We flushed his eyes and gave him the usual ration of stuff.

@Gator: Jesus made wine so it must be OK by him.
@Steve: It's hard to argue with stupid and come out a winner.

Expat 47:

Ok, that opens the pearly gates to a host of rednecks and other risk takers with the final comment of "Hold my beer and just watch this".

Having been a company safety officer, I unhesitatingly believe this. Some people are Stupid, with a capital S.
