Young Rastafarians

Following up on my previous post about the Kuku-Kuku of Papua New Guinea, here's another image from The Circle of Life: Rituals from the human family album. It's my favorite image in the book. It's captioned, "Outside of Kingston, Jamaica, young Rastafarian church members smoke ganja."

The text goes on to explain that Rastafarians consider marijuana to be a sacred herb, and that the ritual of smoking it mirrors similar rituals in many other cultures: "Ritualistic smoking of tobacco is an expression of group bonding in numerous Native American ceremonies, and the use of incense, hallucinogens, or alcohol to alter the senses is a common initiatory practice worldwide."

It would just be too obvious for me to comment on this one, wouldn't it?

Nothing more shocking than Christian churches giving the children wine - something I always looked forward to on Sunday morning.

It looks to me like little Laura Ingalls discovered what that plant on the prairie was!

Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me
Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me

Roll another one
Just like the other one
You've been hangin on to it
And I sure would like a hit

Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me
Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me

Rolllllllllllllllll another one
Just like the other one
That one's just about burned to the end
So come on and be a real friend

Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me
Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me

Everybody sing along this time

Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me
Don't bogart that joint, my friend
Pass it over to me

I can imagine what that kid in the middle is thinking while reaching for the joint.

It's puff-puff give, your f*&$ing up the rotation

I don't think that is like communion wine at all. And I don't know of many Native American ceramonies that involve CHILDREN partaking in ceramonies with hallucinogens. Except for a naming ceremony I can't really think of child specific events in the NA culture. There are ceremonies marking the turn from child to adult...but those are for typically teen aged "children".

Paul Thomas - Are you the Paul Thomas of X-Ray cafe in Athens?

I'm a former Athenian. X-Ray cafe was a great place for weirdness.

Sorry for the off topicness people. Commence with the commenting.

As a historical note form my family connections, there were a branch of polygamous Mormons who, when expelled from what are now the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and parts of border Mexico itself, on arrival in Utah were ostracised and finally excommunicated for the use of Marijuana instead of the already banned alcohol, tobacco and other intoxicants . . . Not sure how the rebels justified its use, but they continued for some years in Nevada as a breakaway branch.

-Maegan-

EXACTLY the same! See what you're doing to your kids, you christian zealots?

Pardon??

Actually, Maegan is right. Cannabis is different from alcohol. It is less addictive, does less harm to the liver, and takes less processing from it's natural state to access the active properties. It also is responsible for exponentially fewer deaths every year.

I could also make comparisons to caffeine if you'd like.

I have done extensive research on marijuana using the kids in my neighborhood. It's not like I'm irresponsible;I don't give it to anyone under the age of twelve.

I've proven marijuana is safe by having them drive my car around the block while high. They have made it back safely EVERY time!

When he went for the hearing, he brought everyone 'brownies'.

Thats just similar to the Christian Church and the wine.
The Christians beleive that the wine is sacret and blessed by Jesus. The Rastafarians beleive that ganja is sacret and that when they smoke it they get closer to God.
