It is so large because it is a solar heat collector not an electric solar panel. A solar heat collector that is used to not only heat during the daytime but to also heat a bunch of rocks to carry the heating system through the night needs a lot of heat collecting surface to do the job. But yes, it is also less modern than it could be and it could have also been mounted, at least partially, on the roof to disguise it. And more modern units yet heat water directly instead of air and are much more efficient.
