Home Sweet Home

So making homes out of shipping containers is a thing. It is kind of similar to modular homes that are usually installed on a slab. Some of the ones featured above are very nice, impressive even. Reuse, renew, recycle in action. Also a cool idea.

Ehhhh... Too much 'work' done on these to brag that they were shipping containers. That'd be about the same bragging about how your house was made out of mud because you used bricks.

Also excellent for grounding purposes during a lightening storm.

The reason shipping containers are available for these projects is because they're not durable. You have corrugated panels set in a straight frame, meaning lots and lots of pockets where corrosion can start. Virtually every joint has a cavity, so they can't be easily inspected. The floors are made to take heavy loads, but not repeated ones -- normal flexing quickly leads to metal fatigue. They're simply not made for long-term use, which is why they're sold for scrap when only a few years old.

There's no insulation, no thermal breaks, and the metal isn't rustproofed. Seals for doors and windows set in corrugated metal has always been the bane of metal building manufacturers -- of: reliable, cheap, and leakproof, you can only have two out of the three.

And who wants to live in a house where the rooms are only seven feet wide?
