Betty Furness for Westinghouse

The weirdest thing about this commercial is the incredibly tiny waist of almost 40-year-old Betty Furness. I can't take my eyes off it.

NOTE: the first video runs slow, at least for me. Best to let it download entirely before hitting play.

In today's dollars, that $17.95 iron would be close to $200. That TV would be over $2500 (slightly more in limed oak).

Either she had a killer workout routine or one hell of a girdle…

What amazes me about these 1950s commercials is how long and verbose they were. I feel like I’ve learned a lot about irons and televisions (and yes, that first one lagged for me).

Some people are born with extremely tiny waists, like Violet Chachki, the winner of 7th season of RuPaul's Drag Race. However, like a supermodel in 4 in high heels, Violet Chachki does wear a girdle.

Actually, everyone is born with a small waist.

Wasn't that Alice Kramden at the beginning using the 'wrong' iron?
