Graduated Alone

May 1949: Eva Mae Bradbury was the only member of her graduating class at the public school in Ada, Kansas. The school nevertheless put on a full commencement program for her, attended by 150 people (which was about the entire population of Ada).

Mom told me that her total graduating high school class was three, in Nebraska. I thought she was joking - my class size was about 500 and I thought that was the norm. For my hometown in California, it was the norm.

She was both valedictorian and salutatorian. Instead of a yearbook, she had a yearpage.
