That would be a mighty big farm, to stretch from San Francisco to Sacramento. Hard to see how one family could work it all. I guess the state figured they didn't have to cough up the $25 MM if they gave him all the land. The story left out the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court denied validity of the land grant.

I suspect this is a little exaggerated. In any case, Sutter’s treatment of the Indians was so bad that he probably deserved any bad fortune that came his way (at least if you can believe his Wikipedia article).
