One of my father's co-workers at the fire department owned a butcher shop as a side business for many years. He would tell us kids that during the Second World War he would sell beef through the side door for ration points. His neighbors wondered why his car always had gas and tires.

Another observation - when I lived in Pittsburgh the joke was that when a major winter storm was forecast that there would be a run on, wait for it, TOILET PAPER! Not milk or bread to the same extent.
