Lotti Golden

In Look magazine for September 9 1969, there's an article about an aspiring young singer named Lotti Golden, who wanted to be just like Dylan. Never having heard of her before, I got curious and did some research.

She did go on to release a couple of albums. This blogger discusses her career and offers a compressed audio file of one whole album. This fellow does the same.

But overall, poor Lotti is so obscure she doesn't even have a Wikipedia entry, and her records never made it to CD.

In 1982, she tried again with a group called Warp 9, purveyors of "new wave funk." You can hear two samples of their stuff here.

If you listen to the clip below, you might see why she never made it big. This song is like five different disparate songs jammed into one.

Well, Fred, and everybody, you are in luck, and so is the rest of the world. My brother, so inspired by my efforts in illuminating information on Lotti Golden's career, went and snapped up a copy of the album for me - with lyric sheet. Although I am mightily disappointed with the lack of interest in anyone contributing to the Lotti Golden Lyrics Project I am still determined to see that her creative output get the attention and recognition it so richly deserves. And even if that's not possible, at least I can type up the lyrics for all to see. It's a task that is long overdue, and I am perplexed why no one has taken the time to do this, in the over forty years since "Motor-Cycle" was released. So tune in later this week - they'll be up there ... somewhere ... my myspace page for sure, but somewhere where they will be searchable for anyone interested to see with ease.

All right - The Lotti Golden Lyrics Project is complete. You can find them at http://www.myspace.com/mandolinsteve9 or search on "Lotti Golden Lyrics" - it's the second top hit at google.

I haven't read the Look article, but if all she is doing is mentioning an ambition, well, she was, and is, not alone. What singer-songwriter wouldn't want to be mentioned in the same breath as Dylan?

As much as I'd like to agree with you about her inspiring and intriguing generations of listeners, I have to wonder how many people have actually heard her record? I get blank stares every time I mention her to someone who has never heard her - that is, virtually everyone. 😉 I wish I knew some way to calculate her listenership. (There must be sales figures somewhere.) She nearly defines obscure greatness. The true definition is Tommy Flanders, who recorded one great album then completely disappeared, apart from the odd rumor. At least Lotti Golden put out a single and another album, and has a track record as a producer. But yes, there is this remarkable, brilliant record, which has continued to resonate over the years and inspire, if not generations, then for generations. 41 years ... and still no CD release ... baffling ... and yes, intriguing. 😉

guys, don't take this wrong, you are certainly welcome here. But you know you could start up your own lotti golden fan blog. it sounds like you have plenty of material and intrest to do so. all the best to you.

Well, I'm gonna go way out on a limb and guess that interview was severely edited, or that she didn't want to talk much about the past. This is for a motorcycle mag after all - she may be saving the in-depth stuff for Rolling Stone. Still, it's a coup for Helmet Hair, a bona fide scoop.

That said, it is great to see the pics from the Look Magazine article. She was smoking hot back then, something the album photos only hint at. Also, it was a real treat to see one of her friends/characters, Silky. We forget these were real people, not just characters in songs, and seeing one puts that in perspective. I would still like to get a copy of the magazine - they're out there - to read the article, but seeing the pics helps assuage that desire somewhat.

You ask some very good questions, but I don't think anyone is listening too closely. As far as I can tell, this blog was posted 3/3/09 and has not been upodated since. Most of the useful information since then has been posted by you, me, and a couple others. That said, there is a byline under the video:

If you go to the main blog page there is this info:

All original content in posts is Copyright © 2008 by the author of the post, either Alex Boese ("Alex"), Paul Di Filippo ("Paul"), or Chuck Shepherd ("Chuck"). All rights reserved. The banner illustration at the top of this page is Copyright © 2008 by Rick Altergott.

I assume that Alex Boese is the Alex of Alex' Weird Universe, Chuck Shepherd is the owner of the syndicated column News Of The Weird, and Paul Di Filippo is the author of the comments on the header of this blog. I imagine you could contact him directly about your concerns, but you run the risk of irritating him about something which has been flying under his radar for over two years, and operating all right in its status of benign neglect, and having him take it down. If this blog disappears, the one place I know of where there is any internet chatter disappears, and the only two people I know of who actively care about Lotti Golden (outside of her camp) will lose contact and also a public forum. So since there seems little to be gained and much to be lost, for now, I advise not rocking the boat. Meanwhile, posting comments here seems fairly useful for the time being. People interested in Lotti Golden surf through here occasionally, and it's as good a place as any to acquire or trade information.

Clearly a few things have changed since the blog started. There is a wikipedia entry, and a website, though that is still just a placeholder. Her records have still never made it to CD, though one track from a separate single has made it to a compilation. Five songs have been put up on youtube - One from "Motor-Cycle," three from "Lotti Golden," and the single, A-side only.

A Lot Like Lucifer
Lately, I Feel Like I Wanna Wake Up Out of This Dream
This Time I Wanna Lose
Do You Use It
Sock It To Me Baby It's Your Thing

There are also a few vid clips of songs she was involved in in her capacities as producer or writer, but these hold little interest for me.

Hnag in there - better days are coming, at long last!

It would seem that no one is listening Patti. My guess is that they have the music turned up too loud

Sorry, Patty. I'm fat fingering badly today.

That's ok Mini Viking. To Amahabin, we are not a music blog. Our site is all about the weired, strange, and unusual. Perhaps a visit to the main page will help you understand what we do. Our intrest spans all catagories with one common thread, the unusual. Ms. Golden was just a blip on WU's radar, but she seems to be much more to you. That should indicate to you that this site is really not the appropriate place for your intrest in her career.

Hey guys - It took me a little while to figure out what you meant, and all I could see on the main page that seemed like a mission statement was this: Weird Universe explores every aspect of a human and natural cosmos that is not only "stranger than we imagine, but stranger than we can imagine." Is that what you meant? Because that's on the top of every page, no special trip needed to find that. Well, anyway, OK, I get that, though I am not sure why Lotti Golden was deemed weird enough to merit a blog. I'm glad Paul did, though, because when I started searching for information about her a couple of years ago, this seemed one place worth supporting. As little as there was here, she is that obscure that this little bit was significant at the time. And he did express gratitude for my contribution and that of another, so that was encouraging, as were the comments from other members. I figured getting approval from one of the head honchos put me in good stead.

But yes, this is not a music blog, though why you feel this shouldn't be discussed here is mystifying. Lord knows almost anything else does, I don't see why there isn't room for this. But if all you want to do is make fun of people and the goofy things they do, then perhaps this should get moved elsewhere. Nothing wrong with either activity, nor either the notion that they can coexist. Ignoring posts and threads that don't interest you, just changing the channel - these are very useful approaches to these situations. 😊 I mean, I love News Of The Weird. I used to read it religiously when it was in my local free weekly; and when a pretty creepy temp job I had taken showed up in there, it was a thrill that I still cherish. But a lot of people do love music and get wound up about the music and artists they love, and it is probably best to avoid the flames that could easily arise when these two disparate impulses meet.

Inasmuch as patty said we are welcome here, maybe she was just being polite. I can take a hint. So amahabim, Jason-ross, Jasmine Troy, csartsong, Frederick, CarMc, swanavala, and whoever else surfs by - it looks like it's time to move along. I don't know anything about blogs, and have had little interest so far in learning more nor time to spend hosting one, but if anyone wants to post something to my myspace zone, feel free to do so:

http://www.myspace.com/mandolinsteve9 or http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&bID=536792070

I admit, this is probably pretty lame as blogs go, but it could evolve from there. If someone has a better idea, I'd like to hear it.And actually, patty, if you have any suggestions on how to go about doing this, I would appreciate any advice. Seriously. It is undiscovered territory for me. Thanks.

And lastly, amahabim was right - Paul's info is out-of date and should be updated. People surf randomly and it is best to have the most accurate info available so misinformation is reduced. And I guess I was wrong - people are listening, after all. 😉

Journeybear, I apologise, of course you are right. Please feel free to use this thread as long as you wish. I did not mean to be rude or to push you away. I guess my point was not to expect the original post to be updated. I think the original idea was that the song was unusual nothing more really. Those of you who have a deep interest in Ms Golden please feel free to exchange info and ideas to your hearts content.

A little FYI...

There are, as of this writing, 371 pages of ten posts each on this blog. That makes 3710 posts in just a little bit over 3 years. Or 1236 posts a year. We all try to make the original post as complete and up to date as possible when we post it. And every one of those posts is still open for comment. Anyone who digs a post out of that pile and has more up to date info is welcome to update it. But most of us have moved on to posting new material and don't revisit our old posts. We just don't have time for that.

Again, if someone has more up to date info feel free to post it but don't jump on the rest of us for not keeping track of nearly 4000 posts to keep them totally up to date every time something changes that we probably didn't know about anyway.

Hey, patty and yogi - Thanks for the clarification, and the statistical perspective. You're quite right - updating posts is a daunting task (for fans of Greek mythology, the terms "Herculean" and "Sisyphean" come to mind) - especially when there are so many, they are of a wide range of types, and this is a site maintained by just a few people having fun, for free. Plus, I'm sure the vast majority of posts are about odd occurrences of a newsy nature, so there is no point in updating them. Something happened, someone mentions it, some people comment on it, and that's it; on to the next. This is a little different, in that though something unusual happened, many many years later something about it changed. As I mentioned, perhaps contacting the OP (Paul) directly would be the way to go. I'm not going to bother him, for all the reasons already mentioned. It is true the information is there in the subsequent comments for him to see, and if he wants to update his post he can. But it's also true that if anyone interested surfs by, he or she should be able to find it there, just has to look a little further.

All right, I think that's enough about that! I would like to mention, though, that this album really is an underappreciated gem, and I may take the time to post another song or two from it. If anyone thinks this song is all over the map, wait till you hear "The Space Queens (Silky Is Sad)." It's about eight songs in one! :gulp: Meanwhile, I'll repost the site to download the album - http://www.mediafire.com/?zmpt6c9iuyt - and the lyrics are available at my myspace page - http://www.myspace.com/mandolinsteve9 or http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&bID=536792070

Thanks again. I think this has been a real productive interchange.

Hey Patty, I am going to leave this one for you to respond to. I have had my dust up for the month already. It looks like someone has their shorts in a bunch and maybe you can help unknot them.

No sense in trying further Yogi. I am just going to let them discuss it amoungst themselves
Posted by Patty in Ohio, USA on 07/24/11 at 02:05 AM
amahabim - You are right that this info is outdated, but you are wrong to take the people here to task for this. This is News Of The Weird, not a music journalism blog. If you are looking for the ultimate authoritative article about Lotti Golden and her career and its milieu, look elsewhere, or create it yourself. You have got to quit pestering these people. Read what they said and I said, and then please, sir, climb down off your soapbox. It took me over an hour to write what I said in my post of 07/22 at 04:50 PM in an effort to defuse a potentially flame-scorched situation. And now you have nearly undone that effort with your diatribe. And now I find myself in this position again. You may be right about some of what you said, but wrong about how you are saying it, and where and to whom.

Your approach and tone are rude and strident. You could have just added the information you found to the discussion without trying to rub their noses in it. And bear in mind, copying and quoting information found elsewhere on the web does not inherently constitute or even validate an argument. This is not the place for your mission, and these are not the people to be preaching to. I suggest you read the article at wikipedia, read what I have up at my myspace blog and what others have said there, or start your own blog where you can express your opinions as you wish.

I don't understand why so many people would rather gripe about someone else's shortcomings on their blog than start one of their own that says what he or thinks should have been said. Words to live by: "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness."

So, that chill pill finally kicked in, eh? Cool. The song in question is the one in the video, "A Lot Like Lucifer." As the OP said, "This song is like five different disparate songs jammed into one." It’s a fair point - the way it is written, performed, arranged, and produced is pretty disjointed - though because I have been listening to it and the rest of the album since it first came out and have heard it hundreds of times, I’m so used to the way it goes that I don’t think twice about it most of the time. There were others at the time producing work of this nature - for instance, "Brown Shoes Don’t Make It" by The Mothers Of Invention is a masterful mishmash of about a dozen themes. So she wasn't operating in a vacuum; she didn't spring like Athena fully armored out of the head of Zeus. What sets her apart from others working this way is she was a new artist with no track record or fan base, so this album was extremely ambitious. It's too bad it flopped, as it is a great album (as far as I, and a few others, am concerned), but flop it did. At least all these years later people are still listening to and talking about it, and she may be preparing to make a comeback.

Oh, here I am again, going on about music here. 😉 I guess she really does belong in the News Of The Weird; anyway you look at her music, it is not the usual, run-of-the-mill variety. You're right about how this page turns up in a google search. That is how I ended up here, after all. And now, with all the further posts here, this is bound to attract even more attention. So it goes; it's better than there being no information anywhere. Although it would be nice if the original post were amended to reflect some of the changes since it was posted, doing so could counteract some of the subsequent posts. Anyway, people truly interested in the topic can always read through these to find the newer information. I am still thinking about starting a blog at my myspace page. Check that in a couple of weeks. Of course you are welcome there, as is anyone interested in discussing and learning about Lotti Golden. :coolhmm:

Judging from the amount of copy written about a post this old I just have to ask; is either one, or both, of you on her payroll???
Posted by yogi in Kennesaw GA on 07/25/11 at 10:06 AM
Seriously? If you read these posts you'll see how much they are about discovering information about her, being frustrated by the small amount of it, and the sharing of what little we have found. Her payroll ... it is to laugh! She has been so off the grid for so long, I can't imagine how she has been getting by. Affording a staff? Really! This would be a pretty odd way to go about promoting an artist. Besides, this goes back only two years. The album came out in 1969.

I can't speak for anyone else, but my involvement in sites like this began a while after I got into websearching, and decided to see what was out there regarding some of my favorite obscure artists. (There is a list at my myspace page, which I am just not going to mention any more). Two in particular intrigued me: Tommy Flanders, who was the lead singer for The Blues Project on their last album, then recorded a great folk-rock album called "The Moonstone," and then vanished; and Lotti Golden, about whom there was a little bit, and the trail led me here (a few other places too). The Tommy Flanders search has proven astonishingly fruitless. At least there has been some buzz about Lotti Golden.

But no, I'm not on her payroll nor anyone else's. This whole deal has been a labor of love. I am just a struggling musician and former music journalist, with a passion for the music I love. Maybe someday I'll receive the dubious honor of being the subject of an entry here. I mean, rock mandolin is an unusual concept, perhaps weird enough for us here. Come to think of it, that day may have already come. Take a look here to see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVFt1XWVkYk
Posted by journeybear on 07/25/11 at 12:25 PM
The payroll statement was "tongue in cheek" satire.

I did a quick Google search and came up with a bunch of listings for Tommy Flanders, even some music downloads. Below are just two of the listings.

Tommy Flanders - 1

Tommy Flanders - 2 - WIKI
