What a weird and different era....

I can recall the "Keds" ad you show here, and my little brother and myself bugging our folks to buy them for us when it came time to buy school clothes -- but that would place the ad closer to 1958 than 1948 (I wasn't born until 1953). I think the next year or so, the "in" shoe was "P.F. Flyers", IIRC --

Grrr, bite! Now I have that stupid jingle stuck in my noggin. But thanks for "jogging" my memory (ouch ... sorry about that!)

My source for the clip stipulated 1948, but maybe that same commercial ran for a number of years....?

Paul, I too doubted the dating on the commercials. (Born in 47) Kedso got animated in 58 according to this site http://www.tvacres.com/admascots_kedso.htm . TV just wasn't that sophisticated in 48 or, for that matter, that prevalent in homes. WWII and all that.

Good stuff anyhow, Paul. Westinghouse's infomercial could have been a first!

The evidence seems to point to a typo in the attribution. 1958 is probably more like it.

nothing you said gives a hint to your age taed so i can't even hope to guess how old your wife is. but taking hubby's name is something women of a certain age looked forward to while growing up. i can remember in jr. high and high school 'practicing' writing Mrs. John Doe (using the name of whoever i had a crush on at the time). it was a right of passage for many of us. i've been married for over 20 years and am happy and proud to use either mrs. patty doe or mrs. john doe (names changed to protect the quasi-innocent) your wife doesn't like her first name and prefers her middle name, but she is happy to carry your name because she loves you. smile and give her a kiss. 😉

sorry paul, got side tracked there. i love the old commercials. especially the westinghouse comparision and testimonial.(i hate infomercials they suck)we had a westinghouse freezer that mom said she and daddy bought used in 1960. it was used up to the day mom moved in 1996. she didn't have room for it where she went and got rid of it. i bet it pulled a sh!t load of power compared to newer ones though.

Teed, please let your wife know that it could be worse!

In one area of Greece a women is called by adding a female ending (not really a suffix) to her husband's name. If my name were Ioannis (John) she would be called Kyria Ioanninna. (Mrs. Johnnina)

I found out about it decades ago while visiting friends in the region one Easter. Kyria Expatinna tried to hid it from me when I asked what all the name play was about but one of the locals clued me in. To this day, if I want to skip lunch or supper, all I need do is call her Kyria Expatinna.

MW, my live in translator says, "Lord, have mercy on us." I've always equated it with the Catholic chant that is about the same thing.

Hope that helps.
