Follies of the Mad Men #41

[From Playboy magazine for June 1974.]

"Let's take a screeching unfunny harridan, dress her in Colonial drag, then simulate a hideous war wound using our product as a makeshift sling. Then, let's run the ad in a magazine filled with beautiful naked women for contrast."

Vern--while it's true that there is no blood or bandage on Diller's arm, I think the intent is plainly to mimic the famous painting of the wounded Revolutionary soldiers with flag and fife. But in any case, the pose is quintessentially stupid.

Paul - That makes sense since they are called Fife and Drum Belts.

BTW - Phyllis Diller has not aged at all. She is still as butt-f$%king ugly as she's ever been.

Since her first facelift! Do you remember her before that? She was like...well, never mind; the risk of flashbacks is just too great, and trust me, you *DON'T* want to know.... 🧛

I'm just not moved to own one of these belts.

I remember Phyllis from when I was growing up. Funny lady!

Expat - Yeah, she was funny but I wouldn't want to come across her picture while thumbing through a Playboy.

Maybe, Big Gary, the Phyllis Diller connection is that she was alive during the Rev. War.

Madd Maxx - "t'humbing' through a Playboy?" Is that all you need to do?
Posted by lostinthevalleygirl on 10/29/08 at 08:15 PM
lostinthevalleygirl - 'Thumbing through a Playboy' was just a comment on the most common use for Playboy and how scary it would be to turn the page and see Phyllis Diller, in mid stroke mind you.

I, personally never cared for Playboy...too pre-school. My old favs were Penthouse and Hustler. Of course, since getting online sometime around '95 I haven't had a need to pay for and store magazines.

Comic genius, really? I don't know if I'd go that far. I think Jack Benny was a comic genius.

Kingmonkey, most of these pups weren't whelped yet when Phyllis Diller was the only white female standup star. Joan Rivers and others followed.
