My Colombia Trip

Expat47 was kind enough to recall that I took a recent trip to Colombia. Those interested can read the whole report here. With lots of neat pictures.

But I never encountered the human bloodhound drug!

My Excellent South American Adventure

Despite my daily posts last week, I was really among the missing. I spent from the 20th to the 27th (counting travel time) in Medellin, Colombia, being a guest speaker at this conference.

But now I'm home, and have read all the posts and comments from the past week, and just want to say a big thanks to Alex and Chuck and all the witty, talented WU-vies who make this site so wonderful.

Here are two fotos from my trip.

Strange grafitti. What revelation is the monkey experiencing?

Vacation

Next week, I go on vacation to Block Island, Rhode Island.

Here's the link to a webcam so you can try to spot me!

But meanwhile, for this week I have five Follies of the Madmen for your viewing pleasure. And the queue is filled with great items that will launch automatically while I'm gone.

Everyone play nice, and continue the parade of weirdness.

Thanks once more to all our loyal participants and readers, who are true friends!

Spam Solution

Alex has established a method of allowing quick deletes of spam, and I cleaned up a couple of dozen this morning. Faithful WU-vies should see fewer annoying comments. Thanks for your patience!

Spam Troubles

image
We realize that spammers are clogging our wonderful comments section, the lifeblood of WU. Alex, the closest we have to a techie, is researching the matter.

Thanks for your patience and continued support!

Farewell!

image
Here we are, at the one-year anniversary of WEIRD UNIVERSE, and I'm about to say goodbye--for a while, anyhow. It's been a marvelous year, full of friendship, creativity, and, well, weirdness galore. I'd like to say thanks to Chuck and Alex, and to all the wonderful readers of the blog.

However, now I need to step back to attend to other projects. But I leave the blog in the capable hands of its readers. And I'll be checking in every day.

Perhaps you recall the very first, non-introductory post, as seen in the screen-capture to the right. I figured I might as well go out on the same note. So look for FOLLIES OF THE MAD MEN #70 to follow. I didn't quite manage to hit 100, but 70 is still pretty good.

Finishes and Starts

image
Dear Fellow WUvians,

Let me just add my two cents to the ongoing dialogue about this blog. First, I've had a wonderful time doing it, working alongside such geniuses of the bizarre as Alex and Chuck. Second, I'm proud of and honored by the community of readers and participants that has evolved here. You can congratulate yourselves on being the First Family of Weird.

image
But the economics of all this fun are insupportable, alas. I currently spend from 1.0 to 1.5 hours daily on WU. That sounds trivial, doesn't it? But consider that that amounts to one work week per month! A week in which I generate no money to feed a plump cocker spaniel named Brownie. Look at him: could you resist his entreaties for more kibbles? And kibbles cost money.

In any case, I applaud and support Alex's attempt to change the site to viewer participation, and I'll probably contribute in the far future as circumstances allow. But for all of May and June, I intend to perform at my regular rate of two posts per weekday and one apiece on the weekend days, so as to reach our one-year anniversary in July with head nobly upheld.

Stay weird!

Di Filippo & Woodring Book Signing

image
I'll be away in Seattle from Friday October 10 through Monday October 13, attending the launch party of my new novel, Cosmocopia. But I've stacked up four posts in the queue, all new FOLLIES OF THE MAD MEN. Enjoy!
